A Comedy of Mirrors -- a good title for my upcoming novel. But I am drawing a complete blank this morning as I sit on my sister's couch listening to the rain and wanting to generate ideas -- get that plot outline started, generate some characters. I want to write a humorous novel, but nothing is coming to me. I suddenly recall that I usually freewrite every day and I haven't done that yet today. So, this is what I begin to write.... A humorus novel is what I originally planned, but a dark idea occurred to me last night in the dark. I rejected it outright because it did not fit into the context of a humorous novel. Now I regret not writing it down because I cannot remember it at all. Now as I sit letting any ideas flow, I think of my schedule for the week instead of my novel. I have phone calls to make, which I don't look forward to because I don't like talking on the phone, not because I don't like talking to the people I wish to call.

Wet day. The drizzle comes down incessantly. It has been a drought year for Upstate New York, so it is very welcome. I am still uninspired. Hey! Just getting the NY setting setting might be great -- a pickup truck with an add-on enclosure just drove by hauling a big pump. I bet someone's basement flooded. Daydreaming. Drifting. The pump moans in the background as even more rain falls down. House surrounded by moisture -- soft wet permeating with a lonely sound -- quite dense. I am here soaking it in. Moist warm under the floor lamp as I write this. The trickle down effect -- wet, cold drops hitting the roof, the gutter, the sill, the windows -- on ever still -- slide down into me as I sit writing in this dry notebook wondering what I will write. Will it ever come to me or will a thousand memories just pelt me endlessly, ceaselessly, and nothing occur to me that is a whole -- just a myrid of ideas -- nothing that colesces into a single idea, a work, a representation of a concept. This is a day when you huddle into yourself and collect yourself to weather the winter and wait for spring.
